Pleurisy Symptoms

You may be one of the people who is suffering from cyanosis and frequent chest pain and ignores them all the time.

Some of us are just too busy to pay attention to these things and that is a huge mistake. These could be pleurisy symptoms.

Pleurisy symptoms can be indications of serious health problems which should be recognized immediately. Many people are suffering from Pleurisy but a large portion of this population is not even aware of their own condition.

What is Pleurisy?

Pleurisy is the inflammation of the pleura. The pleuron is the serous membrane which folds back onto itself to form a two-layered, membrane structure.

It is located within the thoracic cavity and aids the optimal functioning of the lungs together with the pleural cavity and the pleural fluid.

The physical relationship of the pleura with the lungs enables it to function effectively and efficiently. Therefore, pleurisy symptoms could be signs of lung problems.

What Are The Causes of Pleurisy?

There are many causative agents for having pleurisy:

  • Pneumonothorax - is the accumulation of air or gas in the pleural cavity of the chest stuck between the lung and the chest wall. This usually happens after physical trauma on the chest.
  • Bacterial Infections – infections are the common causes of Pleurisy symptoms. It is because the inflamed pleura rub against each other which bring about pain in the chest. Tuberculosis and pneumonia are usually associated with this condition.
  • Autoimmune disorders - e.g systemic lupus erythematosus- autoimmune disorders causes the disruption or destruction of some parts of our body.
  • Familial Mediterranean fever – an inherited condition that often causes fever and swelling in the abdomen or lung
  • Lung diseases – like Cystic Fibrosis, sarcoidosis, and asbestosis.
  • Some reasons are idiopathic which means that they are not fully determined.

What Are The Pleurisy Symptoms?

There are numerous pleurisy symptoms but there are those that are very common:

  • One of the pleurisy symptoms is difficulty in breathing. It is because the lungs do not have the effective assistance of pleura.
  • Fever and chills – they are also common pleurisy symptoms. It is because pleurisy is usually associated with viral infection and it is only our body’s natural defense mechanism to increase our temperature.
  • Unexplained weight loss – Pleurisy symptoms include those that are also observed on people who are suffering from serious health conditions like unexplained weight loss. It could be for the reason that the condition hinders the appetite of the person.
  • Sore throat that is followed by pain in the joints – Pleurisy symptoms are also associated with autoimmune disorders. And these autoimmune disorders harm even the persons own body parts because of the overreaction of the immune system.
  • Vomiting Blood – The inflammation of the pleura could cause them to enlarge and rub against each other. If the friction is too strong it might disrupt their integrity and cause bleeding.
  • Chest pain – Pain is one of the most frequently observed pleurisy symptoms. It is because the pleura rub against each other. It can also be felt in the shoulder and in the back.

How To Confirm That You Have Pleurisy

Pleurisy symptoms that are mentioned above may not be enough to determine if you have pleurisy. A series of diagnostic tests should be taken to confirm if one person is positive or negative of this condition.

The pleurisy symptoms may misguide you so it is important that to you take some of laboratory tests:

  • Chest X-ray – It will show you how your heart and lungs look. This picture could also show the abnormal collection or growth in the pleural cavity.
  • CT Scan – It will show signs of pneumonia, tuberculosis or tumor.
  • Ultrasound
  • Ultrasonography utilizes sound waves to make an image. It can show where fluid is situated in the chest. It also can show some tumors. Even though ultrasound may identify fluid around the lung, sounds beams cannot go through through air or bone. Therefore, an actual picture of the lungs cannot be obtained with ultrasonography.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – uses powerful magnets to show tumors and pleural effusions.
  • Blood test – can tell a lot of things. It can detect bacterial or viral infection. It can also help diagnose pneumonia, rheumatic fever and pulmonary embolism.
  • Arterial blood gas – a small amount of blood is taken from an artery typically in the wrist. The blood is then checked for levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide. This could determine if the lungs takes in oxygen effectively especially if the pleurisy symptoms which are evident are difficulty in breathing and cyanosis.
  • Biopsy - It is used if cancer is being suspected. Sample pleuron is taken from the patient and it will undergo a series of test to determine if it is malignant or benign or if there is a presence of cancer cells.

How To Treat Pleurisy

Pleurisy is usually accompanied by an underlying health condition so this condition must be identified first. It is for the reason that the treatment would be more effective if the primary cause will be destroyed first.

This is also to keep the illness from causing other problems. The physician might also give medications that will alleviate the pleurisy symptoms.

Most of these pleurisy symptoms can cause discomfort to the person. The removal of air, fluid or blood in the pleural space can also be done.

If you are experiencing these pleurisy symptoms, do not ignore them. Observe if they occur frequently but do not hold back too long. Consult a physician and verify if you are suffering from pleurisy.

Pleurisy symptoms vary from different people and it is always better to be vigilant most especially when it comes to your health. Pleurisy is indications that there is something happening in your body, it may be something serious.

Do not hesitate to talk to your doctor about it. Health is a gift that should be taken care of. It makes it possible for us to enjoy life.
